Welcome to Preschool SPICE! SPICE stands for Social Pragmatics Independence Communication Emotional Regulation. Many students on the autism spectrum benefit from this setting. The Preschool SPICE class is more routine-based and incorporates an environment and teaching style that is very visual and concrete in nature. We focus on developing social, cognitive, communication, emotional/behavioral regulation, motor, and independence skills. Our class size limited to seven students per session, which allows for ample one-on-one instructional time. Instruction is
given through a variety of approaches which have been proven to be
effective with children with autism and related disorders. These approaches include, but are not limited to: applied
behavior analysis, PECS, sensory integration, visual strategies, daily schedules, pivotal
response training, discrete trial training, positive behavior supports, and social stories. A special curriculum, STAR, is implemented in the classroom. Socialization is a primary
goal for all children in this class, and although typical children are not enrolled in Preschool SPICE, opportunities
are provided for SPICE students to interact with typical children in the other preschool programs on our campus. All students will receive their related services/therapies in the Preschool SPICE classroom.
